WI NatVet OEF/OIF Outreach Coordinator Job Description

Position Title: Outreach Coordinator


Job Description: Recruits Native American Veterans and their families for participation in readjustment counseling services offered by the Green Bay Vet Center.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics: 1) Knowledge of Native American communities and culture in the target area of northwest and central Wisconsin; 2) Experience as (preferred) or with returned and returning Native American Veterans; 3) Knowledge of, familiarity with or willingness to receive basic training in the psychology of readjustment for returned and returning Veterans; 4) Ability to manage and maintain confidential records, including use of Microsoft word and data processing computer programs; 5) Ability to work well with Veteran and Native American Organizations and Groups, including Tribal administration and other groups; 6) Willingness to travel within northwest and central Wisconsin, possession of a valid drivers' license and safe driving record; and 7) Interpersonal communication skills.

Working Conditions: Telephone and computer communication, extensive travel. Position to be hosted at the Great Lakes Inter-tribal Council offices in Lac Du Flambeau, WI and will work in close collaboration with GLITC staff and leadership.  

Characteristic, Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Identifies, contacts, meets with and refers Veterans and/or their families to the Veterans' Administration Center in Green Bay, Wisconsin;
2. Provides information regarding enrollment requirements and program benefits to potential participants;
3. Provides information and materials necessary for the Veteran to contact the Veterans' Center for services or, on the Veterans request, provides his or her contact information to the Center for follow-up;
4. Assists veterans and their families with the enrollment process and scheduling;
5. Documents and reports all contacts made with the target Veteran population using a Veteran Information Form (VIF) and makes referrals to the Green Bay Veterans' Center;
6. Completes and transmits forms to the Contracting Officer's Representative within two business days and if the Veteran is at risk of harming themselves or others the referral and documents will be transferred immediately;
7. Communicates with and provide status reports on a regular basis with/to the Project Coordinator.

Position Availability: Position Contingent Upon Contract Award by the Veterans' Administration.

1. What is your service area? What services do you provide for veterans?

2. Have you had contact with OEF and OIF Veterans in your service area? Are there different circumstances for these than from other veterans?

3. Do you refer veterans to medical, benefits and readjustment counseling services? If so, where do you refer? Why that service?

4. If our organization is funded to provide veterans' outreach to OEF an OIF Veterans, how could we work together for their benefit?

5. What could we do that would support your efforts or that you consider important but that is out of your scope of responsibility?


WI Native American Veterans (EOF/EIF):

1. Do you now use any services provided by the Veterans' Administration?

2. Do you know about readjustment (returning home) services provided by the Veterans' Administration?

3. Have you used or are you using these or any services provided by the Green Bay Vet Center?

4. If not, what information or support do you need to consider using the services?

5. Do you know other Native veterans that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan) that might benefit from the services available at the Green Bay Vet Center? 


WI Native American Veteran Health Service Providers (HIS/Tribal and Community Clinics/Other):

1. Have you or are you providing health or mental health services to returning Native veterans?

2. Do these include Native veterans that served in Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan)?

3. If you are not providing services to this group of veterans, what limits you from providing those services?

4. Do you have or have you ever had an agreement with the Veterans Administration to serve these returning combat veterans? If yes, how well is it working? If no, would you be interested and able to serve veterans if the Veterans' Administration supported your services?

5. Who in your organization may have had contact or would be the one to have contact with the VA about such services?

5. What could we do that would support your efforts or that you consider important but that is out of your scope of responsibility? (Families …?)
